The music department occupies the specially designed Gustav Holst Wing, centred on the beautiful wood-panelled singing hall - a listed building with superb acoustics for chamber music. Beside the hall we've got two large teaching rooms (one of them is fully equipped with Sibelius and Cubase music technology software) and 15 smaller rooms for individual teaching, with full soundproofing everywhere. The refurbishment of the music wing (begun April 2010) will not only enhance the existing provision considerably but also introduce a new recording studio and excellent storage facilities.
It’s like being in a mini-conservatoire. We have our own building with sounds of music all around us, our own practice rooms, orchestras, choirs and bands.
We've got eight grand pianos, nine upright pianos, two harpsichords, two full orchestral percussion sets, two drum kits and extensive classroom percussion, plus the magnificent double manual organ in the great hall, which student organists can use for practice. There's a wide range of instruments available for hire, including all the standard orchestral stringed, woodwind and brass instruments, as well as saxophones and acoustic and electric guitars.
