You are here: Home What we offer Departments Classics

From the beginning we value the precision of Latin and Greek for their own sake and for what they can tell us about our own language but we never lose sight of the fact that they were living and evolving means of communication. The best way to understand the ancient world is to read the original texts – and when you do, you'll feel the fascination of recognising shared experiences and concerns while at the same time being surprised and challenged by things which are strange and unfamiliar.

Everyone starts Latin in year 7 and classical Greek is an option at GCSE and A level. The discipline of translation into and out of the ancient languages is central to what we do. It equips you to read text closely and also to use your own language precisely. Studying the prose, verse and drama of ancient Greece and Rome gives you access to their rich and varied cultures, which have shaped the world we live in. In the classroom, we always seek to set our study of the languages in their historical context and, to add geographical context, we regularly organise visits to classical sites in the UK and abroad. We go to classical theatre events in London and our year 12 and 13 students help teach Latin through the Minimus project in local primary schools.
