Year 9

Chemical formulae and equations; chemical patterns; atomic structure; the chemistry of periodic table groups 1 and 7; air quality and food matters (the first two GCSE chemistry modules).

Year 10

Chemical patterns; ionic bonding; covalent bonding; the relationship between substances' structure and properties; chemicals in the natural environment; electrolysis; extraction of metals; reacting masses; rates of reaction; a GCSE coursework investigation.

Year 11

Food matters; chemical synthesis; reactions of acids and alkalis; neutralisation; preparation of salts; relative formula mass; empirical formulae; percentage yields; rates of reaction; the concept of activation energy.

Year 12

Atoms and reactions; electrons, bonding and structure; the periodic table; hydrocarbons; alcohols; halogenoalkanes; energy changes; green chemistry; a practical skills assessment.

Year 13

Rings, acids and amines; polymers and synthesis; modern analytical techniques; rates of reaction, equilibrium and pH; energy changes; transition elements; a practical skills assessment.
